Thiazide diuretics

Doses

Chlorthiazide or Hydrochlorthiazide: 12.5-25 mg oraly daily reduces the risk of spine or hip fracture

Mechanism of action

Probably act by inhibiting the reabsorption of calcium from renal tubules.

Adverse drug reactions

Dose dependent hypokalemia, increased plasma concentration of uric acid, glucose.

Anabolic Therapy

Teriparatide (recombinant PTH)

Doses

20 $\mu$g subcutaneously daily for up to 2 years

Mechanism of action

Increases bone formation, the bone remodeling rate, and steoblast number and activity.

Adverse drug reactions

Osteosarcoma in very rare cases
