Rheumatoid arthritis treatment

It is treated with disease modifying anti-rheumatoid drugs (DMARDs). This variety of arthritis drug works by curbing the underlying processes that cause certain forms of inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These drugs not only treat arthritis symptoms, but they have capability to slow down progressive joint destruction.

Classification of DMARDs

Non-biological

a. 1st line therapy: Sulfasalazine, Methotrexate (MTX), Leflunomide, d-Penicillamince, Chlorquine, Hydroxochlorquine.

b. 2nd line therapy: Azathioprine, Glucocorticoids, Gold (Auranofin, Aurathiomalate), Minocycline, Cyclosporins, Cyclophosphamide.

Biological

a. Anti-TNF agents: Etanercept, Infliximab, Adalimumab.

b. Anti-IL-1 agents: Rituximsb, Anakinra.
